feelin the season...

  • Dec. 1st, 2009 at 6:24 PM
but not in the best, most wishful way. *sigh*

matt and i just sat down to look at our calendar to figure out where we have time to fit all the things we need to fit in IN! i was REALLY hoping and was seriously planning on doing this. i think it's such a great idea...not just ripping a link off a string of papers or "x"ing a mark on a calendar, but doing SOMETHING..but it's just not gonna be possible this season.

it doesn't help that i completely forgot about a cd release party that is going on tomorrow night for a project matt worked on. then we're off to visit [info]kelleyadam!!! when we get back it is NON STOP. its'f illed with fun things...office holiday parties, family ladies' night, christmas card planning, getting to see my very favorite over the rhine at my newest favorite venue, *maybe* picking up and decorating a tree and then let the baking commence. oh man, i will be up to my eyes in flour. oh, plus the shopping. it doesn't help that we'll be out of town another weekend, but man oh man, am i excited about that one! :D details later! ;)

and yes, with all this stuff, what am i doing? lj? something i haven't done in months? of course! to procrastinate! it's my gift! :D tonight is DEFINITELY a pizza night in! hoping your season is looking a little less frazzled and more tinsley and sparkly with little christmas lights!

VOLT!

  • Oct. 5th, 2009 at 1:31 PM

if you're a reality tv watcher, chef bryan voltaggio is most likely a familiar face!  we've been watching top chef since season 1 and would say we're self-proclaimed foodies, which i also think is really annoying....but anyway!  seeing a dc'er on the show isn't a crazy thing, but seeing a marylander is pretty impressive...and to top that, someone from frederick?!?  wow!  we knew we had to go to his restaurant, VOLT and SOON after he began doing so well in all the challenges!  we made reservations, which wasn't too difficult...we could've gone sooner but people who live here know how crazy getting up 270 during rush hour can be!

i think reality food tv is interesting.  i mean, you're basing an opinion on which contestant you want to win based on the LOOK of food and the personality of the chef.  right?  i mean, you can't actually taste the food.  so imagine our excitement to get to taste it!  i felt a little weird bringing a camera in and definitely didn't want to appear that we were there because of the show, but let's face it...it's the truth, and such is the case with 3/4 of the other diners (if not all!) there.

we walked in a little early and waited in the bar area until our table was ready.  it's a pretty loud area, but you stlil can talk to the person next to you without yelling.  on the far wall of the bar, they have a flat screen tv that is a live-feed of what's going on in the kitchen, which i thought was pretty neat.  while we were waiting, there were constant servers serving drinks and food, but you can imagine the surprise when chef voltaggio walked in!  he was carrying a plate to two girls sitting in the "lounge" area of the bar.  i don't know what they ordered where it was "hand delivered" by the chef, but pretty neat!  what was even more amusing was the girls faces after they ate the food.  if it weren't totally rude, i would've made matt take a picture.  too funny.

so a couple other things about the restaurant.  you can gather all this stuff from the website, but it was still a little confusing so here's the "kim" version.  there are three dining areas...the main dining area, the kitchen dining area and table 21 (which is literally right inside the kitchen.)  a pointer if you're going to go...definitely reserve a spot in the kitchen dining area as opposed to the main dining area.  definitely a cool view of the kitchen area...we were green with envy!  if you want to do table 21, definitely do it.  because truly, if you're dining a la carte, you're going to be spending about $121 anyway (with wine/cocktails included), so might as well do it up!

ok - so what we ordered.

before you even begin, they bring out some yummy homemade breadsticks dusted with sea salt and fennel powder.  then they bring out a complimentary ceviche and then more homemade rolls.  can we say almost full already?

1st course:
matt : tasting tuscarora farm beets : he said it was good. definitely could've used a bit more balsamic dressing, but still good.
kim : market vegatable salad :  simple, but so good. i think the dressing had matt wishing he had ordered mine instead.

2nd course:
matt : i don't think what he ordered is on the menu.  i think it was a pork belly or something.  i wasn't really paying attention to his food.  ;)
kim : cherry glen farm goat cheese ravioli : based on the recommendation of someone who recently went.  and GOOD recommendation.

3rd cousre:
matt : border springs farm lamb : matt said it was good, but he wouldn't order it again.  he said he "didn't find anything wrong with the taste...it's just not something i'd order again..."
kim : wellington farms roasted chicken : ok, so this is going to sound like i'm not playing nicely, but this was only ok for me.  i have mostly eaten a chicken-only diet for the last 10 years so i've eaten a LOT of chicken..especially roasted chicken.  when we went to west end bistro, i thought mine was too salty.  here?  too moist.  is that bad that i said that?? it was just really maybe a bit too much where it was squeaking against my back teeth, which to me is like fingernails on a chalkboard. to be fair, i think we were close to being very full already...so maybe we would've felt differently had we been served this course first.

final course:
matt : dulce de leche : very good, but not as good as mine. ;)
kim : chocolate peanut butter mousse : i'm pretty sure this is what i got.  it had a banana ice cream with it, which is different from what's online.  this was super tasty..there was a crunchy shell on the bottom that made the dessert for me...i would say texturally, it was awesome, but i wasn't loving the stringy cilantro that got caught in my teeth! :)

we were so stuffed we couldn't even really finish dessert...which is a shame because that meant we could barely finish the complimentary ice cream sandwiches they brought out at the end!  and thank goodness the chocolate chip coffee cake was intended to take home...otherwise..well, nevermind.  :)  oh, and truly the best part of the dinner?  when the check came, my co-workers had pre-paid for our meal!  those sweet sneaks!

ok, this has gone on way too long.  and it makes it sound like it was just ok, but it was good and for the "celeb" factor, it definitely is fun to go.  here's a video i should've posted at the beginning....maybe would've saved you from all of this babbling.  :)

once again, crazy busy weekend, but oh so fun!  friday night we went to volt, which deserves it's own post, which it will get!  last night we got to go see toy story 1&2 in 3d.  i know.  we're suckers for gimmicky stuff.  but hands down, toy story 2 is one of my top 10 favorite movies and so how can we pass that up??

today we got to hang out with our friends, mandi, sean and their ever growing brood!  sidney is one cute baby and the three older girls are so sweet and fun to hang out with.  i loved the fact that it only took a couple minutes to have dylan warm up to me!  it used to be within the last two minutes that she'd open up! ;)  we have some pictures and cute video, but that'll have to be in a little while.  after that we zipped up to a wedding of a neighborhood friend that matt grew up with.  fun, but long day.  :P  thankful to be home, but sad that the weekend is over.  *sigh*

oh...and we're going through old hard drives and matt's computer and finding a bunch of old pictures.  found these ones of [info]kelleyadam and [info]jennifernana
these ones crack me up though.

(l) definitely wondering what i'm doing here! so weird and random! i'm obviously standing in for a second, but so funny.
(r) posing as if he's our kid!

but i think this one's pretty cute. :)

maryland people!  look out!  if you are texting on your phone while driving, you could get fined $500.  And if you are under 18 and on your phone,  there's now a law in place!  so, be careful!  here's a link for more info: http://www.drivinglaws.org/maryland.php  this is eff. 10/1/09.

so, matt got to use his camera! (see the last post) but instead of taking pictures, he shot video.  it's definitely a different kind of "video" shooting...matt said shooting is all manual and handheld (which means you're both focusing and shooting while trying to hold it steady) and it's definitely his first attempt, but here it is!  pretty impressive!  again, of andy zipf

and speaking of video projects, i wish i could post the one him and his co-worker did at work.   very talented folks.

whoa!  life has been busy....

just a quick, quick recap because i'm up to my neck in to-do's.
  • went camping this weekend. weather was PERFECT.  matt went fishing/caught his first fish ever in his life.  gutted it, filleted and ate it.  pictures may follow in about 6 months.  for now you can see pictures that becky took here (if she made them public).  the pictures in the beginning of the set are from a cabin getaway during labor day weekend to berkeley springs for a 80th birthday celebration for my grandmother.
  • matt ran a 5 miler today!  he probably will kill me for posting about it!  but i'm really proud of him!  he's been running pretty consistently for about two months now.  he's worked his way up to 8 miles, but he's had a bum knee and foot for a little while (think it broke but never healed correctly) and has been going back down to 6 miles due to the pain.  he got there late, had to run to the other side of the pentagon where the race began (about a mile away), ran to registration and then ran the race that had already begun.  he came in 599/~1500 (not quite sure how many there were total and can't find it online yet.)  very proud of him since the last time he ran competitively (another 5 miler), he couldn't run the whole way....and this time he said there were two monstrous hills!  he wanted to get in a race before the big 3-0 next week!
  • speaking of his birthday, i was a sucker and gave him his present early.  i was going to be really good and wait and play my usual self - the self that doesn't get anything because i'm so worried he won't like what i get so it's usually just a "you're gonna get *insert item here* but i don't know if you want it...." deal.  but!  he has a friend coming over to record on tuesday and he mentioned taking some pictures of him so i decided i'd go ahead and give it to him today.  i've been waiting a LONG time for this order to come in!  i put my name on a waiting list 2 months ago and began calling, on average, pretty much about twice a week.  when i called about a week ago, someone finally said, "you know, you can pre-pay and that bumps you up on the list..."  why didn't anyone tell me?  anyway, as soon as i ordered, i saw that canon has a new camera coming out soon, but of course that will also be on back-order, but it's about $1000 less.  i mentioned the new camera to matt and began to see the drool form but he said he didn't want it because it wasn't full frame.  phew.  so anyway, i noticed that same evening that b&h had the camera body i had ordered IN STOCK last week.  of course the next day i call the place i ordered from and nothing was in stock.  this made me practically swear to never buy from a local place again, since i'm guessing b&h probably gets the most inventory out of anyone.  but lo and behold, friday afternoon i got a call and it was in!  i held off all weekend, fearing they'd accidentally give it away, but i zipped down to get it and surprised matt with an early gift!  the canon 5d mark II.  hopefully this will satiate his appetite for a little while!
  • other than all this, life is really busy.  work is insane and when i look at the calendar, all i see is BUSY.  we are trying to take advantage of the cool, fall weather and pack in as much camping as possible.  which at this point, i'm hoping we get to go at least two or three more times.  we'll have to see.
  • oh!  and is anyone else watching top chef???  we are so proud of our local contestant (at first i wrote yokel because i think i say that a lot but then i googled it and didn't realize it was so derogatory!  whoops!), bryan voltaggio!  i don't know him but friends of friends do and we are psyched about how well he's doing!  we're hoping to get to go to Volt SOON.  wish we had before the show, as i'm guessing it's more difficult to get reservations now!  :)
ok...just heard the laundry buzzer.  time to fold and watch drop dead diva (i know....please don't judge me on that!) :D

  • 6:30 PM
right now i'm having complete new music overstimulation.  it's not like, new people, but new music....colbie caillat, mat kearney and regina spektor.  man.  and i'm getting pretty sappy over the liner notes...tearing up and all...and not like when they thank their moms...but like who played on it.  i'm such a weirdo.  because really, who even reads even that stuff besides us and musicians??  anybody else?

last night was pretty crazy.  we went out to dinner and then over to ben & tina's for some wii.  after that we jetted down the beltway to get something matt bought off of craigslist.  mind you that it was around 1am when we were headed back.  right as we were about to merge onto 270, we saw a car pulled over on the side of the road and two people outisde of the car...one person pummeling the other.  i quickly pulled over (and was a little shocked that nobody else had...) and we called the cops.  we were probably 100 feet away from them and after a couple of minutes the other car started moving....jolted forward and then started reversing, wheels screeching.  the 911 operator told us that it'd probably be safest for us to head out...so we did.  we looped around and by the time we had done so, the car was gone and no cops were in sight.  we exited the highway and on the exit, one of the guys was walking off of the exit.  crazy.  before this, a cop had called us back and asked us for a clearer location.  we called the cop back and told him we saw the guy.  we kept doing u-turns and kept our eye on the guy.  with still no cops in sight, they asked us to drive down the road with our blinkers on.  we stuck out like a sore thumb on a dark, empty road!  the guy we were keeping our eye on definitely had his eyes on us!  all of a sudden we saw the cop car approaching us and we pointed to the guy...then looked up and saw 6 other cop cars approaching with sirens and lights and everything.  matt said that the cop we spoke to got out and was frisking the guy.  we looped around and by the time we did so (we kind of did a longer roundabout this time), the cops were gone but the guy was still there.

ok, so honestly, i think maybe the guy we saw was beating up the other person...maybe a female.  but what i don't get is, if this was the case, how did the person getting beat up get away?  i guess if the cops didn't have another person there, they couldn't really do anything.  and if the guy we saw was the guy who got beat up, if he didn't want to charge anyone, there isn't really anything they could do.  and obviously if he's the guy that got beat up, he's not gonna say anything about that.  oh well.  it was pretty crazy!  by the time we got home, it was about 2:30 and we were pretty pumped with adrenaline still.  :P

oh, and in other car news?  i totally ran up a curb yesterday on my way to work.  it was raining and i was going around a sharp turn.  i don't know if my brakes locked up or what but i knew that i was going to hit it.  as soon as i did, my car started wobbling pretty badly.  i didn't know if i had a quickly leaking tire or what but i kept going to work (i was only a couple minutes away.)  when i got out, i noticed my hubcap was gone and the wheel was bent....but my tire looked fine.  i called my brother who was a lifesaver and went and found my hubcap (when i asked him if it was hard to find where i hit the curb he said "no way.  you must have hit it hard and gone up really far because of where your tire marks were..."  yikes!) and came and took my car to "one of his guys" who was able to replace my wheel and tire with used ones, which only cost me $100!  jimmy DID say that my tire had a bubble on it and that the guy was taking his little tool to take the lugnuts off and they basically fell off!  yikes!  matt is guessing that because i kept driving after i hit the curb, it loosened the lugnuts up.  anyway, after the new tire and wheel, the shaking stopped...i honestly think my alignment is fine, PTL.

so, all in all, there were lots of car adventures yesterday!  tonight?  wii with friends.  fun!

remembering today...

i don't want to get in the habit of continually posting this same post, but i can't help it.  i don't think it really captures what my heart is still feeling...but i never want to forget where i was or what my feelings were at the moment it happened.  i find myself still getting choked up....the weather is fitting for the mood of today...

i think 9/11 kind of snuck up on me this year. as each year passes, i feel like i get more and more desensitized to what happened. 9/11 is on right now, which i think is the best, accurate documentary of what happened that day. if you haven't seen it, it's a must see.

i don't know if i've ever really written it out, but on 9/11, i was sleeping late because i had a late class. i woke up to the alarm clock's news saying that the wtc had been hit by a plane. i immediately turned on the news and saw what had happened. i was sitting at my computer at the same time and began im'ing anyone who was online. i called my dad and he said that "he'd check it out..." matt said that he was about to go in a meeting and that they'd check it out later....i emailed my mom's co-worker stacey and she said "ok, thanks!" it was so frustrating to not be able to get anyone to realize how serious it was. i called my mom and she said that they (she was driving with her other co-worker, tom) just saw a poof of smoke, which was the other plane hitting the pentagon. everything was so surreal and i remember, as probably many others, being just glued to the tv for three days straight, just watching people looking for their families, all the news coverage, etc. later that day, i went to class (i think....and i have no idea why i went to class....) and on my way home, they had just announced that the 1st wtc had fallen. anyway....i want to watch it now, but this is a picture i took the summer before the infamous 9/11.

little eyes, big apple

and this (a picture of a picture taken at the WTC site) gets me choked up every time.

i almost forgot about this thing!

  • Aug. 18th, 2009 at 10:20 AM
life has been good lately!  in minor, but very important news, got a little mini-vacay this past weekend.  i had off thurs and fri, but matt couldn't get off, so i called my sister and mom and we went up to the beach for two sunny, glorious days.  matt met me on friday night and then we spent the weekend with his parents at their beach rental.  we'll be heading up again this weekend, joined by his brother randy, and his wife, kathy.  very excited.  my tan is still not dark enough, but it's getting there!  ;)  we ate LOTS of grotto pizza and ice cream.  two things that sustain us while we're at the beach.  oh, and some french fries.  gross, i know, but soooo yummmmmm.....unfortunately i don't think i have ANY pictures for the weekend!  we're so bad with that these days.

in other exciting news, i have OFFICIALLY begun my job at first place bank!  yesterday was day one and we're already very very busy.  i hate to put this plug here, but seriously, we have a special program where rates are at 4.99% and .375 points.  NICE!  AND, we  have the option to do 80/10/10, which is unheard of in this market!  ok, that's all i'm saying.  i promise i won't harp on and on about it because that's one of my biggest pet peeves, but those deals are too good to pass up! :)

what a full, exciting weekend!  it started out with a fun spaghetti dinner with some friends, a dinner that's fun, cheap and will hopefully soon become a monthly thing!  :)  we watched a movie that i already have forgotten about, but when it was over (and it was a LOOOONG one) we checked our phones around 1:15 and saw a missed call and txt msg from ben on both of our phones saying "please call. 911."  yikes!  tina is pregnant, but isn't due for a couple more weeks, but she said that eli, her almost 3 yr old was early, too so who knows!  we called back and were asked to be on stand-by!!  then we got home, called again and ben said that he'd call us if things progressed...that tina thought she'd be having the baby that night, but they were waiting a little while.  then we got a call about 10 min. later asking us to come over.  we jumped in our cars and off we went!  they headed out about an hour later and then we got a text just a couple hours later saying baby "eva" had been born!  it was pretty exciting to be part of all that!  the adrenaline was definitely kicking in my body and i couldn't fall asleep until the sun was about to rise!

we weren't sure what eli would think when he found us when he woke up, but the first thing he said when i opened the door was "where's the other one?"  can you tell that matt is his favorite?  matt is most kids' favorite! when we're both around, i'm chump change! :)  anyway, we got up, had a yummy breakfast at mosaic, did some quick shopping at buy, buy baby and then went to see the newest, cutest baby!  afterwards we went back to see if ben would want to meet up with us later for dinner, but it ended up just being the three of us (us and eli).  we had dinner at rio and fed the geese.  eli trekked all the way up to target with us and then came home and crashed.  we tried to watch episode one of season two of flight of the conchords, but we crashed, too!

we got to hang out with him for most of today and then came home and crashed some more.  :)  i think matt has a newfound respect for parents (i actually know this because he said "now i get why ben looks tired a lot and just sighs and says 'eliiii.'" ;) j/k friends!), and while i do too, i also have some theroies on it all. ;)   but in all honesty, eli was a GREAT kid this weekend.  lots of fun!

anyway, glad that baby eva is here, healthy and happy!  congrats, ben, tina and eli!  so excited for you all!
